Welcome to the Academic Search Premier (ASP) Bonus Features tutorial! This will cover functions like saving, citing, sharing, and emailing articles.
To learn about basic search techniques, limiting results, and accessing full text, go to the ASP Introduction tutorial.
Using the library homepage to your right, go to Frequently Used Resources at the bottom of the page and click on Academic Search Premier.
You may be prompted to enter your ASURITE ID and password.
You are now in Academic Search Premier.
You have to write a research paper using library resources. You have chosen the topic:
Does genetically modified food have a role in improving nutrition?
1. Type genetically modified food into the top search box and nutrition into the middle search box.
2. Click the Search button.
How many results did you get?
Find the article The potential of genetically modified food crops to improve human nutrition in developing countries by Howarth E. Bouis. (approx #1 on the list)
Click on the title link to open the full record for the article.
On the right-hand side of the page, you will see a column labeled Tools.
The first option listed is Add to Folder. As you search, you can add articles to a folder, which allows you to select only the best and most relevant articles.
Once you have all your best and most relevant articles in a folder, you can print, e-mail, or save them as a group.
You can access this folder in the red bar along the top of the screen by clicking on Folder.
The second option listed under Tools is Print. Use this to immediately print your article information, and the full-text if it is available.
The third option listed is E-mail. Click this to send the article and its information to yourself electronically.
The fourth option listed is Save. You may also decide to save the article and its information to your hard drive or a thumb drive.
The fifth option listed under Tools is Cite.
Click on Cite, and ASP will give you the article citation in seven different formats, including MLA and APA. Scroll to locate your preferred style. From there, copy and paste the citation into your bibliography.
Also, when you choose the E-mail option, it provides the opportunity to send the article citation to yourself in your preferred format.
Another option to save the article is to create a permanent link to it.
The eighth option listed under Tools is Permalink.
A Permalink is a permanent URL that will always take you back to the article in the database. You can copy and paste this link, then save it somewhere safe.
Creating a My EBSCOhost account will expand your options and help you be a superuser!
In the red bar at the top of the screen, click on Sign In. Then click on Create A New Account.
This will allow you to save and retrieve your search histories, set up alerts, organize your research using folders, and more!
Let's return to our search results. In the small text above the title on the left-hand side, click Result List to go back to the list of articles.
If you'd prefer to save your entire search instead of just one article, there are other options for you.
Scrolling up, you will see Share above the first article on the list on the right-hand side.
When you click on Share, you will see three primary options.
The first option is to Add to Folder. You can add records 1 through 10, or you can add the entire search. Creating a folder will allow you to access your search at any time, as well as save, print, or e-mail articles in bulk via your My EBSCOhost account.
The second set of options allows you to Create An Alert. There are two types of alerts.
The E-mail Alert uses your My EBSCOhost account to set up an alert that will let you know whenever new articles on this topic are added to ASP.
The RSS Feed Alert gives you a URL to paste into your RSS reader. Whenever new articles on this topic are added to ASP, they will show up in your news/feed reader program or app.
The third set of options allows you to create a Permalink to the entire search, as well to post it to various social media sites.
By clicking on the proper icon, you can place your link on your Twitter or Facebook page (among others), not only ensuring that you can replicate your results, but also allowing you to share your searches with colleagues.
